Tips and Tricks for Cleaning Your Wrestling Singlet After a Match

Posted by Jeffrey Pape on

You worked hard on the mat today during your match and created a good sweat. You want to keep your uniform in top shape for the next time, so it’s important to take the proper steps to washing it. The vast majority of wrestling singlets are made out of mesh or polyester knit and come in a variety of colors and patterns. They are extremely stretchable and durable. While singlets are typically built to last a long time, they can last even longer if cleaned in the proper manner. Cleaning a wrestling singlet involves a few steps. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions on cleaning your singlets!

Rinse and Pre-soak

Begin by rinsing the singlet off in a sink so that any grime, dirt, dead skin cells and other body soil are removed. After rinsing the singlet, fill up the sink or a bucket with warm water for a pre-soak that will eliminate stains. Mix in a small amount of laundry detergent along with half a cup of baking soda. The baking soda will help remove any foul odors. You can also add an all fabric bleach to brighten the singlet's colors. Let it soak for a minimum of an hour.

Wash the Singlet

Once the singlet has finished soaking, put it in the washing machine. Do not add any other clothes into the washing machine along with the singlet. Other clothes are likely to have cotton that will produce lint that will stick to it. Only use cold water when washing to prevent the singlet's letters, numbers or other designs from fading away. Be sure to add a normal amount of detergent.

Dry the Singlet

Once the singlet has been washed, don't put it in the dryer. The dryer heat can cause it to shrink and it will contribute to the fading of its colors. Dryer heat can also set any stains that the singlet has accumulated. Always dry by hanging it on a clothes line where it can air dry. If you are hanging it outside, take care to avoid times when the sun is at its peak. Find a shady area or air dry the singlet on a cloudy day or indoors.
Keep your wrestling singlet clean and ready to wear for the next match by following these easy steps.
